Music Education for children in Haifa’s poorest neighborhoods

Background
The Dunie Weizman Conservatory of Music together with the Youth Department of Haifa Municipality initiated a program in April 1998 offering a musical education to children in 4 youth centers in Haifa’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods.  The program is funded by private donations and receives matching funding from the municipality.
The program provides a musical education for 45 children who receive instrumental music lessons on piano, saxophone, clarinet and violin.

Goals and objectives
The children in these neighborhoods come from large immigrant families from the Former Soviet Union, Ethiopia and earlier waves of immigration from the Arab countries of Morocco and The Yemen. These inner city neighborhoods are home to single parent families, there is high unemployment and often drug abuse.

It is known that music develops the intellect, the body and the soul. We have found that given the chance to enjoy a one on one relationship with an excellent music educator, these undoubtedly deserving children have risen above their surroundings, enjoy greater self esteem and have become a source of pride to their families and communities.

Rhythms of the World

(Drumming and body friction for youth at risk)
Taught by Yaron Rosenberg

This program was initiated by the Conservatory in January 2003 together with the youth department of the Haifa Municipality and the N.G.O “yeladeinu betnufa” for youth at risk in the Hadar neighborhood of Haifa.  The Arab and Jewish children wander around the streets of their neighborhood after school hours with no activities or parental guidance.  This neighborhood is the most infamous area of Haifa, where prostitution, drugs and gambling abound.

The program initiates the youth into the art of working with drums, “darbuka” and body friction. This activity can be compared to the world renowned “Stomp” or the Israeli “Miyumena”.
This program is extremely successful and provides a creative outlet for the youth in which they express themselves in a fun atmosphere.  They have performed several times at concerts in Haifa, the Galilee and on Children's television.

We believe that experience of the performing arts offers these undoubtedly deserving children a chance to rise above their surroundings, enjoy greater self esteem and become a source of pride to their families and communities.

Concerts for youngsters (kindergarten, first and second graders)

The aim of this program is to introduce classical music to children in Kindergartens and to first and second graders from junior schools. The program has three stages of activity:

  • The kindergarten /first grade music teachers together with staff at the Conservatory plan a program of classical music which is taught to the youngsters during the school year. In discovering and enjoying music they sing, clap (use non -  tuned percussion), draw and dance to the chosen repertoire.

  • Students from the Conservatory visit the youngsters in school, introduce them to the instruments and provide an opportunity to hear the chosen repertoire in a live performance.

  • The youngsters take part in an interactive concert at the Conservatory where the chosen repertoire is performed by young students, ensembles and the choirs.
