Music Education for children in Haifa’s poorest neighborhoods
Background The Dunie Weizman Conservatory of Music together
with the Youth Department of Haifa Municipality initiated a program in April 1998
offering a musical education to children in 4 youth centers in Haifa’s most
disadvantaged neighborhoods. The program is funded by private donations
and receives matching funding from the municipality. The program provides
a musical education for 45 children who receive instrumental music lessons on
piano, saxophone, clarinet and violin.
Goals and objectives
The children in these neighborhoods come from large immigrant families from the
Former Soviet Union, Ethiopia and earlier waves of immigration from the Arab countries
of Morocco and The Yemen. These inner city neighborhoods are home to single parent
families, there is high unemployment and often drug abuse. It is
known that music develops the intellect, the body and the soul. We have found
that given the chance to enjoy a one on one relationship with an excellent music
educator, these undoubtedly deserving children have risen above their surroundings,
enjoy greater self esteem and have become a source of pride to their families
and communities. |
